HAIR in the Millennium in the workplace...?

i would like to know the feelings of people who work, have to work, hire, fire, anything based on a persons hair. have you passed over a well qualified applicant because of their hair? have you not introduced yourself to a new co-worker because of their hair? do certain styles (more conservative, maybe) appeal to your senses (and what does that really mean?) is there diversity in your workplace for people to wear their hair (in a well kept manner) the way that they want or are there restrictions that everyone must abide? are those restrictions fair across the board (applying to both men and women?) is there a double standard? do you have control over your follicles?

HAIR in the Millennium in the workplace...?

In every place I have worked (Verizon, MCI, Bank of America) there have been strict dress codes that include hair to a certain degree.

At Verizon, they were more interested in hiring people who are considered "outside the box" as far as clothing and culture. I loved it! I could totally experiment with my hair and dress in a professional setting with ease. Thats a first and only....

At MCI (actually a sudsidiary), things were more conventional, unless you were a top seller, then the cards were all in your favor. My buddy had his nose pierced, big azz gauges in his ear lobes, and..... a jet black mohawk that somehow could become liberty spikes during the week. It was awesome seeing the system bend for money makers!

As for Bank of America.... forget it! They had systems in place to stop you before you got to the second interview. I never saw anyone who would be described as "goth" or "extreme" come through the doors permanently. They weren't having that!
