Heredity. You get what you get.

Possibly genetics?

I think it is your genetic make up passed down from your parents

Genes

Well, it is genetics. Your genes from your parents affect the shape and texture of hair as it grows. So, yes, the way the hair grows from the follicle affects hair. The rounder the hair shaft is, the straighter hair is (I am talking about the circumference of the hair strand itself). Likewise, the flatter the hair shaft is the curlier hair will be (think of that curling type ribbon). Very straight hair, like Asian hair, is perfectly round and cannot bend. Most people have hair that falls somewhere in between round/straight and curly/flat.

As for texture, that is also genetic. It is affected by the cuticle (outer layer) of hair. Some people have a smooth, strong cuticle that stays flat, and so have shiny smooth hair. Others, especially curly haired people, have thin cracked cuticles that poke out from hair shaft, causing coarse frizzy hair.

So, you can try all the products and magic treatments you want, but most people are born with a certain type of hair and that is how it stays. Hope this is what you wanted.
