How and why does hair go grey?

I found a hair that was still growing dark brown at the top, but about halfway down it faded to grey. I thought the colour was determined at the follicle as the hair grows, so why has mine lost its pigment further down? Anyone know?

Cause of Gray Hair

Going gray is part of life.

As we get older the pigment (color) cells in the roots of our hair -- our hair follicles -- gradually die. As the color cells die, the hair loses its color and it becomes transparent.

The age that we start going gray is determined by our genetics. Some people go gray very young.

The color is pigment produced by the follicle. When the follicle stops producing pigment the hair becomes gray. Hair is dead protein cells. as they die the follicle makes more cells causing the hair to grow.

grey hair is due to old age, stress, hair products and chemicals we put in our hair. some are also genetically predispose to having grey hair
